The Loperena Excellence in Mentorship Award

 

The Loperena Excellence in Mentorship Award is named for Ernesto Loperena, the former Executive Director of the Council on Adoptable Children (COAC) in New York, New York and former NAA Board of Directors President. During his enduring career in child welfare, Ernesto was an instrumental leader and mentor to many in the child welfare community.  In fact, Ernesto continues to mentor and support leaders to this day – even during his retirement! 

 

The Loperena Excellence in Mentorship Award is given to a mentor that has demonstrated skills in supporting the next generation of child welfare leaders.

 

The Outstanding Mentor:

 

1) practices early identification of leadership talent;

 

2) supports their mentees professional growth as individuals and as members of their agency;

 

3) increases mentee’s access to people of influence who can also offer guidance and open doors for professional advancement;

 

4) encourages authenticity, not assimilation, so their mentee can navigate leadership as their true selves; and,

 

5) creates environments that are safe, liberated and affirming to their mentee, based on their identity, and for all leaders.
