Ujima Impact Award

Ujima Impact Award

Ujima is a Kiswahili word that means “collective work and responsibility.” It is also one of the seven principles of Kwanzaa, an annual celebration of African American culture from December 26 to January 1.

The Ujima Award will honor an individual, child welfare agency or organization. The awardee embodies Ujima through their collective efforts to improve outcomes for children and families impacted by the foster care system.

The Outstanding leader, agency or system meets the following criteria:

  1. Promotes Family Connections despite Resistance: Demonstrates a dedication to working towards family connections for children and families impacted by the foster care system.

  2.

  3. Cross-System Collaboration: Recognizing that permanency and belonging are achieved not in isolation, but through sustained collaboration with families, communities, and systems, the leader, agency or system creates and nurtures partnerships between multi-disciplinary teams, organizations, and adjacent systems to support children, youth and families.

  4.

  5. Policy Change: Advocates for policy changes that prioritize family connections to improve wellbeing outcomes for youth and families within their local community, state, or nationally.
